Damp proofing puts a barrier between the foundation and the ground around it, so moisture and water cannot work their way into the building.
A damp proofing material is applied to the outside of the foundation walls to keep moisture from seeping through cracks and gaps. Water that gets in can weaken a foundation over time, and damp basements invite mould and mildew.
